Background of the Study

Traditional birth practices have long served as the cornerstone of maternal care in many Nigerian communities, including Ede North. Rooted in cultural beliefs and passed down through generations, these practices are administered by experienced traditional birth attendants who provide personalized care, especially in areas with limited access to modern healthcare (Fagbemi, 2023). While these indigenous methods offer culturally sensitive support and comfort, concerns have been raised about their safety and efficacy when compared to modern obstetric practices (Ogunleye, 2024). Recent research suggests that reliance solely on traditional methods can lead to complications during childbirth if not supplemented with modern medical care (Adekunle, 2025). This study examines the impact of traditional birth practices on maternal health outcomes, analyzing both the benefits and potential risks associated with these methods (Fagbemi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

In Ede North, the widespread use of traditional birth practices has raised concerns about maternal health. Although culturally significant, reliance on traditional birth attendants without adequate medical oversight may increase the risk of complications during childbirth (Ogunleye, 2024). The problem is to determine whether these practices contribute positively to maternal health or pose potential risks, especially in the absence of modern healthcare integration (Adekunle, 2025). This study seeks to identify the challenges and benefits inherent in traditional birth practices and to suggest measures for improving maternal outcomes (Fagbemi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the impact of traditional birth practices on maternal health outcomes.

2. To assess the role of traditional birth attendants in the local healthcare system.

3. To recommend strategies for integrating safe traditional practices with modern medical care.

Research Questions:

1. How do traditional birth practices affect maternal health in Ede North?

2. What role do traditional birth attendants play in maternal care?

3. How can traditional practices be safely integrated with modern healthcare?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Traditional birth practices significantly influence maternal health outcomes.

2. A higher reliance on traditional methods is associated with increased maternal complications.

3. Integration of traditional and modern healthcare improves maternal outcomes.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it highlights the dual impact of traditional birth practices on maternal health, balancing cultural traditions with modern healthcare needs. The findings will inform healthcare policies and community interventions to ensure safer childbirth practices while respecting indigenous methods (Fagbemi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining the impact of traditional birth practices on maternal health in Ede North Local Government Area, focusing solely on indigenous methods and local health outcomes.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Traditional Birth Practices: Culturally based methods used during childbirth.

2. Maternal Health: The health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

3. Traditional Birth Attendants: Community practitioners who assist in the birthing process using indigenous knowledge.
